A low-speed vehicle is defined as a four-wheeled electric vehicle capable of achieving a speed of up to 35 miles per hour (mph) that meets the standards in Title 49 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, section 571.500. An individual may not operate a low-speed vehicle on a highway that has a posted speed limit greater than 35 mph.

EV owners are required to pay an additional registration fee of $230, and plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric vehicle owners are required to pay an additional registration fee of $77.
